Learning Experience: Guest Speaker (30 minutes)
Aboriginal Elder Guest Speaker – Indigenous Parents and caregivers are also given the opportunity to get involved and share their stories. All parents and students are welcome to attend.
Learning Objectives
LS 5: Use interaction and communication skills to contribute to and extend discussions by:
- Clarifying ideas
- Offering explanations for a point of view
- Introducing topics using agreed protocols
Classroom Organisation
- Students are to be seated in the school hall with fellow classes as the school welcomes a Aboriginal elder.
- Students are to be reminded of the appropriate way to address the guest and questions that can be considered as sensitive.
Learning Experiences
- Students are to compose questions based on their KWL charts created at the beginning of the week.
- These questions are to be check by a teacher or leader prior to the presentation by the Aboriginal elder.
Assessment
- Students’ involvement in this discussion and presentation will be noted.
Adjustments
- Students with ESL will have support to record and practice their questions.
- No other adjustments are necessary for this learning experience.
- Both Indigenous students are supported through this learning experience as it relates to stories from their community. These students should be encouraged to participate in this ceremony- either through dance or by sharing some of there personal stories. This further links students communities and cultural backgrounds to the classroom, in turn creating a positive learning environment where each student feels supported.
