This book depicts the childhood of an indigenous boy Ian Abdulla growing up along the Murray River in the 1950’s. Around this time, bush tucker was bountiful and everyone was expected to assist in the collecting food for of the family. Along with his brothers, Ian picked quandongs for pies, caught lizards and collected other sources of food. And when times were tough, Ian was sent to the butcher to buy sheep’s heads, although these were seen as a delicacy.
